Working with Cancer

The Hummingbird Centre will always look at ways to work with the Community of Bicester and the surrounding villages.

One Christmas Mechelle Harris, Founder of The Hummingbird Centre was approached by a company in Bicester who within a month 3 employee’s had been diagnosed with cancer, they wanted to support them but at the time had no real idea what they needed to do. A phone call was made to The Hummingbird Centre and over a few weeks, all the right plans had been put into place to guide those affected accordingly in the right direction and Management received the guidance they needed to support their employee’s.

During this time Mechelle and her team realised there could be other companies within Bicester experiencing the same issues, even if they had an HR Department it’s not always clear what can and should be done when dealing with a work colleague who may be affected by cancer,

Title: – Working with Cancer

Contents:-

The session will provide participants with a better understanding of:-

What cancer is, how it is typically diagnosed and treated
The challenges faced by cancer survivors in managing work and cancer
The legal framework – an employer’s responsibilities
Workplace Adjustments
Why things can go wrong between employers and those affected by cancer
Talking about cancer at work – what to say, when, how and to whom
Dealing with recurrence, terminal cases and bereavement
Resources available to employers

The session will be interactive, drawing on case studies and participant’s experience.

At the end of the session, we would be looking to encourage participants to develop an action plan to take back to the workplace.
