Bicester Job Club celebrates five years

A job club which has helped 2,000 people on the road to employment will celebrate its fifth anniversary with a special job fair in Bicester.

In spring 2009 Cherwell District Council and partner agencies* launched the Bicester Job Club offering practical help, advice and support for people seeking employment or education opportunities.

To commemorate the fifth anniversary of the club’s launch, a special job fair will be held in Bicester with more than 20 local employers, training organisations and career advisors promoting current vacancies and opportunities.

Adrian Colwell, head of strategic planning and the economy, said: “The Bicester Job Club was launched in 2009 and since then 2,000 people have passed through its doors to receive free help and support in the search for employment. Whether looking for their first job, returning to work after a break from employment or just searching for a new career challenge, our expert advisors have been on hand to help people perfect their CVs, gain valuable experience through volunteering and offer direction on routes into work.

“We are delighted at what this initiative has achieved for jobseekers and employers over the past five years and look forward to continuing to provide such important services to strengthen our economy and residents’ involvement in it.”

The job fair will take place on Thursday, 15 May at The John Paul II Centre in The Causeway from 10.30am – 2.30pm. Among those in attendance will be representatives of Bicester Village, Brethertons LLP Solicitors and Fresh Direct as well as army personnel and recruitment and training companies. It is jointly organised by Cherwell District Council and Bicester Vision.

Job vacancies being advertised at the event will include LGV driving, retail, administration and many others.

The Bicester Job Club was launched three months after Cherwell introduced the Banbury Job Club and since then a third club has been established in Kidlington.

The job club takes place every fortnight at Bicester’s Methodist Church Hall on Fridays from 11am – 1pm. The next session is due to take place on Friday, 16 May.
