50 people representing 35 organisations attended the Bicester military event on Friday 19 October to find out about the advantages of employing military service leavers, their skills and how vacancies can be advertised directly to those looking to settle in Oxfordshire.
Sir Tony Baldry MP and Adrian Shooter opened the event and were followed by the Army Engagement Team who gave a very interesting presentation showing the skills, training and work of army personnel – with a focus on team work, leadership, time keeping, camaraderie, and a drive to succeed.
The Career Transition Partnership and Civvystreet explained the services and support they provide to service leavers and how employers can advertise their vacancies.
We then heard from the Commanding Officer of 23 Pioneer Regiment who covered the construction/artisan skills his soldiers have and why the trademark ‘versatility’ of the Pioneer soldier has made them such a valuable asset to the Army. The regiment is being disbanded over the next 2-3 years and we are working closely with them to ensure these skills are retained in Oxfordshire.
All redundees come with generous funding for retraining. If the skills are not quite what your business requires, they can be developed – at no cost to the employer – to ensure requirements can be met. This can be managed through the Career Transition Partnership who manage resettlement for all the Services, and they have already established close links with the Oxford & Cherwell Valley College who are on standby to assist.
Feedback from the attendees has been very positive with some great links being made during the networking time.
Oxfordshire County Council, Bicester Vision and the 23 Pioneer Regiment will be working closely to ensure businesses are kept informed as the redundancy process progresses.
