Cherwell Business Awards 2015

The prestigious 2015 Cherwell Business Awards Gala Dinner brought together 200 guests to celebrate the hard work, success and entrepreneurship of business people within North Oxfordshire.

The 4th Cherwell Business Awards, which took place on Friday 15th May, once again shone the spotlight on the ingenuity, dedication and achievements of many talented individuals and businesses in the local community amidst the stunning surroundings of Sibford School.

The big winner on the night was Bicester Green, which not only scooped the Charity and Community Award, but also the evening’s most coveted award, Cherwell Business of the Year.

Bicester Green was set up two years ago and is going from strength-to-strength, thanks to the hard work and dedication of its one full-time member of staff and team of volunteers.

A centre for skills and sustainability, the company intercepts items destined for landfill to use as a catalyst for learning in its workshop, sharing the skills of those with the knowledge to repair bikes, furniture and electrical items with those who would benefit from learning.

Emma Gordon, centre manager of Bicester Green, said: “Winning both of these awards really reassures us and gives us the confidence that we’re doing something right.

“We’ve always had good support from the public traditionally and good support from the charity sector and the District and County Councils.  Now we also have the support of the business community too. It’s the final part of the puzzle for us.

“Initially Bicester Green was set up to explore the arena of saving waste, but winning this award has confirmed our viability in business terms. It’s one thing to be a social enterprise, but it’s another thing to get that recognition from businesses, which have a completely different set of criteria.”

Ms Gordon said attending Friday night’s event had “opened her eyes” to the strong business community that exists in North Oxfordshire and is delighted to be recognised as a part of it.

Following its success, Bicester Green, which is currently based on the McKay Trading Estate, is now looking for new premises in the Bicester area, with room for a workshop and office space. Anyone who thinks they may have a suitable space is asked to call Emma Gordon on 01869 388564.  For more information about Bicester Green, visit www.bicestergreen.org.uk

We have a profound interest in the progress of the Town

“The Bicester Chamber of Commerce and Bicester Vision have a profound interest in the progress of the Town and understand that in some circumstances the continual increase in the numbers of houses and businesses will cause disquiet, to individuals and existing business alike. Change is always with us, and both the “Chamber” and “Vision” endeavour to keep the standards from the past while facing, and working, with the challenges of the future.”
